Festivities to include Dual Slalom Drag Race, Ski Parade down Rainbow Ridge, Virtual Scavenger Hunt and more

HOMEWOOD, Calif. (March 24, 2021) – In celebration of the LGBTQ community, Homewood Mountain Resort will host the second annual “Pride Ride” weekend March 25-28, 2021. Chock full of events, activities and custom ski weekend getaway packages, the resort has organized a weekend full of festivities in collaboration with the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association, Tahoe City Downtown Association and area businesses.

“We’re thrilled to bring Pride Ride weekend festivities back to Homewood and Tahoe’s west shore this year,” said Kevin Mitchell, Homewood Mountain Resort general manager. “This is an all inclusive weekend and we want everyone to know they are welcome at Homewood and in Tahoe, and that with COVID-19 safety protocols in place, we are prepared for a fun weekend on the slopes!”

Kicking off Thursday, March 25 at 9:00 a.m., Pride Ride weekend will begin with a virtual scavenger hunt featuring “challenges” both on the mountain and off. Teams that earn the most points will be entered into a raffle for the grand prize — a $100 gift card valid at West Shore Cafe. Presented in partnership with the Tahoe City Downtown Association, join the scavenger hunt by downloading “Goosechase” in the app store.

On Saturday, March 27, Homewood will host the Rainbow Parade on Rainbow Ridge, the resort’s 2-mile beginner trail. Set to stretch from peak to shore, the parade will showcase participants’ colorful ensembles all the way down. To join, meet at the summit of the mountain (at the top of the Old Homewood Express chairlift) at 12:00 p.m. Following the parade, the Dual Slalom Drag Race will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., to name the fastest drag queen on the mountain. The top three participants in their best drag ensemble will be chosen by the public and rewarded with prizes. Registration is free, and the race will start at the Big Blue View Bar.

Both Saturday and Sunday, March 27 & 28, the ski days will end with DJ tailgate sessions in the parking lot from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. featuring DJ Cindy and DJ Cisco. Dancing is highly encouraged, however attendees are reminded to follow social distancing guidelines and keep their parties close to their personal vehicle with members of their own household.

A variety of ski and ride packages that include on and off mountain experiences such as lift tickets, lessons, food and beverage, VIP parking and more are available, with rates starting at only $99. In addition, local partners are offering discounted lodging and other specials with proof of participation in Pride Ride weekend, and all weekend long, a special pre-fixe menu and take-out specials will be offered at West Shore Cafe.

The resort has received 131 inches at the base and 236 inches at the summit this season, and spring conditions are ideal. Current snow depths are 46 inches at the base and 104 inches at the summit, with forecasts calling for a chance of snow ahead of the weekend, followed by sunny skies and mild temperatures Saturday and Sunday.

HOMEWOOD MOUNTAIN RESORT NOW OFFERING BACKCOUNTRY TOURING WORKSHOPS FOR ALL EXPERIENCE LEVELS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HOMEWOOD MOUNTAIN RESORT NOW OFFERING BACKCOUNTRY TOURING WORKSHOPS FOR ALL EXPERIENCE LEVELS

Monday, Jan 25

Building on the backcountry experience provided by its snowcat skiing program, Homewood Mountain Resort is expanding learning opportunities for those who want to explore the backcountry. The resort will offer a series of workshops this winter that range from foundational courses for those who have never tried backcountry skiing or snowboarding before, to avalanche safety courses and sessions for experienced backcountry enthusiasts interested in augmenting their skills. These courses are in partnership with NASTC and the U.S. Forest Service.

“As more and more people venture into the uncontrolled, unpatrolled backcountry, we recognize there is an increased need for educational opportunities so they can be prepared to make good decisions and know how to evaluate both the snowpack and terrain,” said Kevin Mitchell, general manager of Homewood Mountain Resort. “The new courses we’ve introduced are a natural extension of our Snowcat Adventure offering and a next step for advanced skiers and riders who intend to spend time exploring the backcountry.”

New courses Homewood will offer this winter include:

Introduction to Backcountry Skiing/Riding – Entry Level

Entry level introduction courses are perfect for experienced resort skiers/riders who are looking for their next adventure on snow. This one-day course was designed for those who want to gain experience, develop their skills and better understand backcountry terrain. It is not an AIARE Level 1 course but will help prepare for it.

This introductory course features a day of touring in terrain beyond the standard lift-served slopes at Homewood with an experienced guide, offering the best way to get acquainted with backcountry touring. Participants must be comfortable in advanced resort terrain and provide all of their own equipment including skis/split board, skins, beacon, probe and shovel. Cost to participate is $499 per group, limit five people per group. Courses are offered weather and conditions permitting and can be booked anytime during the season with 48 hours advance reservation.

Private Backcountry Touring Workshop – All Levels

Designed to assist participants in learning about route selection, kick-turn techniques and navigating avalanche terrain, the specific content covered in this workshop can be tailored to the group’s interest.

This course requires participants to have the ability to ski or ride in advanced resort terrain and provide their own equipment including skis/split board, skins, beacon, probe and shovel. Cost to participate is $799 per group, limit five people per group. Courses are offered weather and conditions permitting and can be booked anytime during the season with 48 hours advance reservation.

AIARE Level 1 and Level 2 Avalanche Courses

In collaboration with Truckee-based North American Ski Training Center (NASTC), Homewood will offer an AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Course March 1-3 and an AIARE Level 2 Avalanche Course March 7-9. The AIARE Level 1 course is a 3-day intensive seminar that covers avalanche formation, observational techniques for snowpack, the ability to use an avalanche transceiver/probe, safe travel methods in avalanche terrain, how to interpret the avalanche bulletin, companion rescue protocols and decision-making fundamentals.

The AIARE Level 2 builds on the introductory avalanche hazard management model introduced in the AIARE Level 1 and adds to it the evaluation of critical hazard assessment factors. Students will describe and discuss weather, snowpack and avalanche processes, and identify how these processes relate to observations and travel within avalanche terrain

Course participation is available on a first-come, first-served basis and must be reserved in advance. Cost to participate is $575 per person for the Level 1 course, and $595 per person for the Level 2.

2020-21 WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WINTER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HOMEWOOD MOUNTAIN RESORT INVESTS TO UPGRADE RESORT OFFERING, IMPLEMENTS NEW OPERATIONS PLAN FOR 2020-21 WINTER SEASON

Lake Tahoe area resort commits to reducing skier visits, caps season pass sales by 25%; Completes first phase of Ellis chairlift refurbishment to shorten ride time

HOMEWOOD, Calif. (Oct.1, 2020) – While the 2020-21 winter season will resemble the authentic, uncrowded ski and ride experience Homewood Mountain Resort is known for, the Lake Tahoe area resort is implementing big changes to ensure public health and safety of its guests and employees. Along with new policies and procedures that align with federal, state and local public health guidance, Homewood has made significant investments in new technology and on-mountain upgrades that will change the way guests access the mountain, including RFID lift ticketing and scanning, and refurbishment of the popular Ellis chairlift. The resort has also committed to reducing skier visits on peak days and has capped season pass sales.

“‘Fewer skiers per acre.’ Homewood has always been known for lesser crowds and we are fully embracing that this season with a planned reduction in skier visits,” said Kevin Mitchell, Homewood Mountain Resort general manager. “Our operational plan continues to put our guest and employee safety as our top priority and includes new policies and procedures for all who visit the resort. While things will certainly look and feel a little different, we know our guests will quickly adapt to the health and safety measures we’ve put in place.”

In response to public health initiatives, Homewood has made significant investments in new RFID technology to allow for seamless lift access, easy reloading of lift tickets online, and kiosks for contactless lift ticket pick-up.

The first phase of the Ellis chairlift refurbishment project, completed prior to the 2020-21 season, will reduce ride time by nearly four minutes, providing access to popular intermediate and advanced terrain.

In addition to these investments, new processes and procedures implemented this summer to ensure guest and employee safety will carry through to the resort’s winter operations. Here’s what skiers and riders can expect when visiting Homewood Mountain Resort:

Implementation of Industry-wide Guidelines

Throughout the summer, Homewood has collaborated with the ski industry, led by the National Ski Areas Association and Ski California to create a set of shared, consistent operational guidelines. The resort will adhere to the principles established in the Ski Well, Be Well guide, as well as with local public health agency recommendations.

Guest Communications

Homewood will use its website, email and social media to communicate frequently with guests. In addition, pre-arrival information for those who purchase tickets will include details on parking, ticket redemption and what to expect with regard to the overall resort experience.

Parking

When purchasing a lift ticket, guests will be required to reserve their parking space. This will help facilitate reduced on-mountain capacity. Season passholders won’t need to make a parking reservation to park at the resort.

Opening Day and Early Season Operations

Opening Day is scheduled for Friday, December 11, weather and conditions permitting. All lift tickets sales will be capped each day throughout the season. All available lift ticket options will be communicated through Homewood’s communication channels.

Lift Tickets & Resort Access

Homewood invested in Aspenware and RFID technology to modernize its ticketing system and better control when and how many tickets will be available throughout the season. New this year, tickets purchased online in advance will be available for pick-up at on-site kiosks rather than at the ticket window. This will reduce touch points and allow lift attendants to scan tickets from up to 12 feet away, ensuring greater social distancing between employees and guests. This technology will also allow tickets to be reloaded onto the same media. Lift tickets will not be available for purchase at the resort.

Ski School & Equipment Rentals

To start the season, only private lessons will be offered. Guests must reserve all lessons in advance. Equipment rentals will also be available with advance online reservation. All rentals will be pre-teched for each guest prior to pick-up, and indoor capacity will be limited in the rental shop.

Lift Loading

The length of skis and snowboards inherently helps with social distancing in lift lines. In addition, new lift mazes will be established with more lateral space between lines and guests will be required to wear face coverings while in line and on lifts. Skiers and riders will be asked to self-group and ride lifts only with those they arrived with.

Lodge and Food & Beverage

Indoor dining will be limited. Instead, guests will be encouraged to use their vehicle as their “lodge” this winter. Hot food and grab-and-go options will be available via online ordering.

Clean Facilities

The resort’s comprehensive cleaning and sanitizing procedures have been increased in frequency in all high-contact places including bathrooms, entrances and exits, door handles, tables and seating areas. The resort’s Safety Aware Clean Team use cleaning products approved for use by the EPA and proven to be effective against viruses. Hand sanitizer will also be available at all payment and check-in locations.

Personal Responsibility

In an effort to ensure public health and keep the ski area open this season, resort guests and employees will be required to follow the resort’s guidelines for COVID-19 operations. This includes wearing face coverings and maintaining social distance at all times at the resort, including in parking lots, both base areas, ticket kiosks, while on or around lifts, and indoors (except while seated to eat or drink).

  • Resort expands snowmaking capabilities, introduces snowcat guide and backcountry training, new food truck offering, signature events and more
  • Over 10 new ski resort partners offer free ski days to Homewood season passholders

HOMEWOOD, Calif. (Sept. 13, 2019) – With the winter 2019-20 season on the horizon, Homewood Mountain Resort has invested in its snowmaking and grooming capabilities, new food offerings at its South Base, and has joined over 10 additional ski resort partners to offer free ski days to Homewood season passholders. The resort will also offer backcountry and snowcat guide training for the first time, and welcome the return of signature, community-focused events including Beer & Gear and the Pride Ride.

“Our team is excited to get back on the snow and to welcome the community of skiers and riders looking for an authentic ski experience back to Homewood,” said Kevin Mitchell, Homewood Mountain Resort’s general manager. “We’ve focused our investments in snowmaking and grooming this year, with the intention of ensuring our guests are skiing and riding some of the best conditions in Tahoe all season long.”

When the winter season starts, resort guests can expect:

Expanded Snowmaking & Grooming Capabilities

New access to water resources will double Homewood Mountain Resort’s snowmaking capabilities this season, making it possible to open more terrain earlier and build a strong base on terrain with snowmaking to ensure a high quality snow surface all season long.

The purchase of a new PistenBully winch cat will allow for high angle grooming on some of Homewood’s steepest terrain. Leveraging PistenBully’s latest technology, Homewood’s newest snowcat can efficiently maintain the resort’s most well-trafficked trails with low emissions that are in compliance with Tier 4 standards.

Snowcat Guide and Backcountry Training

In partnership with the North American Ski Training Center (NASTC), this season Homewood will offer snowcat guide and backcountry training to the public.
